Today is runoff day. Meet the two Democrats and two Republicans running in the April 16 runoffs for the U.S. House District 2 seat, which covers Montgomery and stretches from Phenix City westward to include part of Mobile.

Action 8 News Anchor Jerome Jones conducted sit-down interviews with each of the candidates to help you make your choice when you vote.

Here are those interviews and more information about the candidates:

DEMOCRATS
Anthony Daniels
Shomari Figures

REPUBLICANS
Dick Brewbaker
Caroleene Dobson

These candidates are in runoffs because they were the top two finishers in the March 5 party primaries. With a crowded field of candidates on primary night, no one won more than 50% of the vote, which is what made the runoffs necessary.

The winners of the runoffs will face each other in the general election on November 5.

Last year, District 2 was redrawn under court order to give Black Alabamians a greater chance at representation. Alabama has seven seats in the U.S. House, but only one Black member of Congress.

With that change, there is a greater chance, but not a guarantee, that a Black Democrat will win the seat.

With the U.S. House close to being evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, this race is being watched nationally for the chance that it would alter control of the House, which is currently in the hands of Republicans.

Current District 2 U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, a Republican, was drawn out of the district when the lines were changed. He lives in Enterprise, which is now in District 1. For that reason, he chose to challenge current District 1 U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl, who is also a Republican. Moore beat Carl in the Republican Primary and moves on to the November general election.
